USDC but no ETH: why is my transfer blocked?
Your wallet holds 50 USDC, yet sending 20 USDC shows “insufficient funds”. The amount to send and the way fees are paid are two separate lines to read.

THE SHORT ANSWER
For a standard Ethereum transfer, network fees are paid in ETH separately from the USDC being sent. Some MetaMask operations can cover fees using another token. Check the available payment option and total before drawing a conclusion.
Three words before we start
- USDC
- A token designed to track the dollar. In this example it is the asset you send.
- ETH
- Ethereum’s native asset, used by the network to charge for transaction execution.
- Gas
- A measure of work executed on Ethereum. Total cost depends on the work required and its price.
Standard example: enough USDC, no fee balance
Assume 50 USDC and 0 ETH on Ethereum. You want to send 20 USDC; the preview estimates fees at 0.0004 ETH and offers no other payment method. There is enough USDC for the amount requested, but the ETH balance cannot cover the displayed fee.
These figures are made up. Fees are not a fixed percentage of the USDC amount. Reducing the transfer from 20 to 10 USDC does not turn the remaining USDC into ETH.
MetaMask may offer another way to pay
MetaMask documents eligible operations where another token can cover fees, including USDC on Ethereum. Options depend on the network, operation and enabled features. The preview shows the charged token and proposed cost, which may include a MetaMask fee.
This does not mean “free fees”. In our second fictional example, sending 20 USDC with a displayed total charge of 0.50 USDC debits 20.50 USDC. From a 50 USDC balance, 29.50 USDC remains. Always read the full preview: we do not predict your price or eligibility.
Before trying to unblock the transfer
Record the network, amount, fee-payment token and total debit. One overall euro value does not answer these four questions.
Check that the fee balance is available on the operation’s network. Seeing assets on Base does not automatically make them available on Ethereum. Changing the displayed network does not move them.
If no suitable payment option is offered, pause the transfer and consult official help. Do not arbitrarily lower the gas limit to hide the error: that limit controls permitted work, not a discount on its price.

Reasoning: This case deliberately fixes standard payment so you can see two separate balances. The next case introduces another possible option. Do not apply this conclusion to every wallet or transfer.
Read the sent asset and fee-payment asset separately.
Fees are offered in USDC
This time, the fictional preview offers eligible USDC fee payment. It explicitly says 0.50 USDC covers the entire charge in addition to the 20 USDC sent.
Reasoning: This calculation uses a made-up preview, not a MetaMask price. The operation still has a cost even without a direct ETH debit for the user. In a real preview, check the received quantity, fee unit and total debit.
A different payment method does not mean free fees.
ETH, but on which network?
The app displays several networks. You are preparing a standard transfer on Ethereum. There is an ETH balance on Base, but no movement between networks has taken place.
Reasoning: The issue is separate networks, not a frozen screen. Examine a solution actually offered for the intended transfer; changing the sending network without checking recipient instructions could introduce another error.
The same asset name does not mean the same available balance.
Two more useful questions
Do I need to buy a fixed amount of ETH?
This guide does not prescribe an amount to buy. Costs vary and another payment option may be available. A number from an old tutorial is not your current estimate.
Why does a platform charge USDC for a withdrawal?
A platform can set its own withdrawal charge and handle the transfer for you. Its charge and the fee paid to the network are separate things. Check its preview and terms.
